2 million sign petition against offshore drilling on US east coast

Green activists on Wednesday delivered to the White House a petition of 2 million signatures calling for the reversal of last year’s decision by the US government to allow oil drilling off the Atlantic coast, according to Bloomberg.

The petition echoes local protests that have been registered up and down the east coast at town and county meetings.

Just two weeks ago the town council of Kure Beach in North Carolina became the 100th coastal community to oppose offshore drilling and seismic testing. And more have followed suit since.

Now this petition adds extra heft to the grassroots objections to fossil fuel exploration at sea. Most objections focus on the potentially devastating environmental and economic damage that could result from possible leaks or accidents during drilling operations.

The Department of the Interior is considering an offshore oil and gas development plan for 2017-2022 that could include leases for east coast drilling. That plan should be released in a matter of weeks.

The US Atlantic region has been off limits to drilling for almost 30 years.
