Handy tanker sales ring in the new year

The new year has kicked off with a very strong S&P market, with a number of vessels reported sold and a likely lengthy roundup of deals due later this week in our Weekly Broker column.

Handysize tankers are the hottest sales candidates so far this year. Troubled Aegean Marine Petroleum tanker arm Aegean Shipping Management has let go of the five-year-old Green Hellas for $26m, brokers tell Splash, leaving the Greek outfit with a fleet of three 2014-built, 50,000 dwt tankers in this segment.

In addition shipbrokers list plenty of elderly handies being sold. Clarkson Research’s latest weekly report notes that further activity in the MR sector is expected over the coming days.

Another sale of note is the Japanese-owned Marine Express, a ship that has just been committed to undisclosed buyers for a price of around $16m, and the slightly smaller and a bit older JX Ocean-owned, High Glow, built 2006, a handy that invited offers last week and is understood to be in final negotiations.
