On the same day that Maersk Line announced 4,000 job cuts, Maersk’s offshore marine arm Maersk Supply Service has announced further layups to come and the slashing of the company’s crewing pool by around 200.
Maersk Supply Service said that it has eight vessels laid up and expects more to come in the near future. As a result, Maersk will cut 200 crew from both Europe and South Africa, in addition to the 120 it had cut over the last couple of months in Canada, Australia and Brazil.
Jørn Madsen, CEO of Maersk Supply Service, commented: “The cost efficiency program is still ongoing, and we are continuously working alongside our customers to develop ways to reduce the total cost of operation to strengthen our competitiveness. As we expect continued low activity the coming years, we need to take the necessary measures to adjust Maersk Supply Service to safeguard our future business.”
Maersk said that the redundancy process will be finalised by the end of November.
