Algoma faces strike action over stalled contract talks

Canadian shipping firm Algoma Central Corporation is facing strike action from members of the Canadian Merchant Services Guild (CMSG), the company announced on Monday.

All 54 workers represented by CMSG are withdrawing their labour after contract negotiations broke down.

CMSG represents navigation and engineering officers.

The union has assured the company that vessels affected by the strike will sail to a safe berth and be secured before the workers leave their posts.

St Catharines, Ontario-based Algoma operates a fleet of dry and liquid bulk carriers on the Great Lakes and St Lawrence Waterway.
