Argentinian authorities boost security at Port of Rosario

Authorities in Argentina have beefed up security measures at the inland Port of Rosario with the aim of clamping down on drug trafficking, according to Reuters.

Around 3,000 extra security personnel from various agencies have been deployed to the province of Santa Fe, where Rosario sits about 300km up the Parana River from the capital Buenos Aires.

The privately-run Port of Rosario is a major hub for the bulk of the country’s grain exports.

Argentina is not known as a major producer of illicit drugs but it is becoming a conduit for their transportation and is beginning to see worse drug abuse problems along with gang violence linked to the drug trade.

National President Mauricio Macri has taken a hard line against the drug trade passing through his country and shifted the emphasis of the anti-drug campaign to private ports.
