As Syria stagnates, volumes grow in Beirut

Cairo: Beirut is gaining plenty of port traffic as the civil war in Syria drags on.

Syria’s Port of Latakia handled 194,064 teu in 2012, down from 356,083 in 2009. By contrast, Beirut’s port numbers have soared, up to 1.041m teu last year, of which 45% was transhipment.

Hamburg Sud, MSC and CMA CGM are Beirut’s main customers, according to the local Daily Star newspaper.  [25/03/13]
