Authorities monitoring hazardous materials from sunken tugboat near Alaskan capital

Government agencies were yesterday making progress with clean-up of hazardous materials from a tugboat that sank, for reasons so far unknown, near Alaska’s capital city Juneau six days previously.

US Coast Guard, Alaska’s Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and Department of Natural Resources were combining with a private salvage firm to contain and remove all contaminating material from the vessel, which sank in the Gastineau Channel.

A boom was placed around the vessel on Friday and it will continue to be monitored for leakage.
