Bad weather forces closure of ports in Chile

Ports along the north and central coast of Chile have closed because of bad weather conditions and heavy tidal swells.

This closure will last for at least two days as weather forecasters predict a fresh front of heavy rain will occur on Thursday.

The biggest ports affected are Quintero, Valparaiso and San Antonio – the country’s largest port and the one closest to the capital Santiago – with their reopening subject to approval of the country’s Port Authority.

Even with these shutdowns the Port Authority has warned of likely storm damage to the ports.

Chilean authorities have advised the general citizenry to stay away from coastal areas.
