Beirut port volumes jump bringing supply chain problems

Cairo: Port volumes through the Lebanese port of Beirut posted very strong numbers in March, however the jump in business is creating cost problems landside.

Beirut has been taking advantage of the stalled road transport through Syria due to the uprising taking place in its neighbour, which has prompted shippers to use Beirut as their main import and export channel.

The chairman of International Chamber of Shipping in Beirut, Elie Zakhour, has warned that there is some road traffic piling up around the port, and he warned that due to limited supply and demand, prices for trucking have jumped in recent months. Zakhour has called for the government to step in and help out to alleviate this cost crunch.  [16/04/13]
