BG to shut Houston office and cut 154 staff

The US Division of Shell subsidiary BG is closing its Houston office and laying off 154 employees it announced on Monday, according to the Houston Chronicle.

BG was acquired in a $50bn-plus deal by Shell early this year. Staff reductions are a cost-cutting part of the consolidation process following the merger as Shell adjusts to the plunge in energy prices.

The lion’s share of layoffs, numbering 118, will happen by the end of August with the balance going by the end of September, BG US Services Inc announced.

Shell had warned even before the takeover was completed that there would be massive job cuts in the 10,000 range across the new merged entity including the shutting down of BG’s former UK HQ in Reading.
