Bosphorus collision kills three

Three Turkish Coast Guard personnel were killed after their vessel collided with a bulk carrier in the Bosphorus strait earlier today.

Tolunay (22,000 dwt, built 1995), a handysize bulk carrier owned by Turkey’s Tolunay Ship Management, was reportedly underway towards the Black Sea when it collided with the coastal safety boat Sahil Guvenlik 25 near the southern entrance to the strait this morning.

Traffic was suspended in the waterway at around 08.40hrs (local time) today and has since resumed for northbound vessels. Towage and pilotage have also recommences, according to a circular from the GAC shipping agency.

Four members of the Coast Guard are in hospital, according to Reuters reports.
