BW behind Samsung VLCC quartet

Proving that BW Group is far from fully exiting the VLCC scene having sold its supertanker fleet to DHT Holdings in return for a majority stake, the Sohmen-Pao led firm has revealed it has ordered four VLCCs at South Korea’s Samsung Heavy Industries with options.

“BW Group has contracted 4 VLCCs at Samsung Heavy Industries with various options attached, including other ship types,” a spokesperson for the Singapore group told Splash today.

The order represents the first VLCC orders for Samsung Heavy in more than half a decade.

“DHT has been kept abreast of the talks along the way, and BW/DHT will cooperate on these vessels. The intention is to enter into discussions to grant DHT an option to acquire the vessels, or manage the vessels commercially/technically,” the BW spokesperson added.
