Cairo seeks to boost local vessel ownership

Cairo: The Ministry of Transport aims to raise the percentage of goods carried on Egyptian hulls from 3.7% to 10%, via launching a package of measures and necessary laws to encourage investment in the operation and ownership of vessels carrying the Egyptian flag.

Maj. Gen. Hamed Hidaya, head of the maritime transport sector in Alexandria, said that there are many obstacles that still need to be confronted to make shipowning easier in the country.

He pointed out that the maritime transport sector recently has sought to remove some of these obstacles through some amendments to the maritime trade law No. 8 of 1990.

He pointed out that these amendments include increasing the proportion of the foreign crew on vessels carrying the Egyptian flag which the law used to define as not exceeding 10%, in addition to amending the law No. 232 about ships safety to increase the life of ships carrying goods from 20 to 25 years.  [05/06/13]
