Canada reaffirms ban on LNG tankers using Head Harbour Passage

The Canadian government will stick to the policy of its predecessor and maintain a ban on liquefied natural gas (LNG) tankers passing through Head Harbour Passage, according to CBC News.

That decision, announced on Thursday by Canada’s Fisheries and Oceans Minister Dominic LeBlanc in answer to media questions, casts into serious doubt a proposed LNG gas terminal at Robbinston, Maine, in the US.

Downeast LNG, a New York energy firm behind that plan, needs access to the Head Harbor Passage for the project to be viable.

The Head Harbour Passage, between New Brunswick’s Deer and Campobello islands, is the only access for large vessels to Passamaquoddy Bay, shared by New Brunswick and Maine.
