Coldharbour Marine: Inert gas to treat ballast water

Linby: Shipping can expect to hear plenty about the Coldharbour Marine GLD Ballast Water Treatment System this year as the backers of the product prepare a huge marketing foray. Andrew Marshall, the ceo of Coldharbour Marine, claims his system is the only in-tank treatment system which uses gas output from its inert gas generator linked to specially designed gas lift diffusion pipe assemblies inside the ship’s ballast tanks.

“It is,” Marshall says, “the only system specifically designed to address the unique requirements of the largest vessels – large tankers, ore carriers and large LNG vessels.”

The Coldharbour system is able to offer guarantees of no disruption to terminal operations and no risk of regrowth on the longest voyages because it is the only system designed and certified to treat the ballast in the ballast tanks, during the ballast voyage rather than in line with ballast uptake or discharge.

“The advantages are therefore obvious,” Marshall says, “no filtration, no pressure drops, no need for additional power generation capacity, even on retrofits, no additional tasks for crews during busy terminal operations, no risk of failure of Port State Control tests at ballast discharge, and because the system is based around inert gas technology, not only is the process inherently reliable but it also requires very little crew training for operation and maintenance, especially on tankers/LNG carriers where crews are already well versed in inert gas system operation.”

The Coldharbour GLD Ballast Water Treatment System will be displayed at Asia Pacific Maritime 2016 in Singapore this March.

Other new products the company is working in include its third generation inert gas (IG) plant specifically designed for LNG carriers.

“This is gaining increasing attention in the market, especially as the IG plant can be used not only for the bulk inerting duties but also the BWTS duties. One system, two roles and all in a smaller footprint, with more reliable and efficient operation,” Marshall concludes.
