Crew detained in Mozambique, accused of trying to scuttle ship

Authorities in Mozambique have detained 15 Indian seafarers suspected of trying to scuttle their ship for an insurance claim.

The 29-year-old Spring Bay reefer ship, which belongs to Latvia’s Aquachart, was scheduled to head from Mozambique to India for its final voyage ahead of scrapping. However, the crew alerted authorities in Mozambique that the ship’s engines had failed, something the local administrator doubted as the ship continued to move fast towards the Mozambique coast.

The local maritime administrator now believes the crew were told to try and scuttle the vessel off the African coastline in order to claim around $2m in insurance. Investigations continue.
