Eimskip heads to China for new boxships

In a rare boxship newbuild order, Iceland’s Eimskip has headed to China for three firm plus three options of a 2,200 teu ice class designed ship. No price has been revealed for the ships which will be built at Guangzhou’s Huangpu Wenchong. The firm vessels will deliver next year and in early 2019, with the options able to deliver in 2019 too.

Last November, Eimskip bought Nor Lines to bolster its Baltic presence.

The last action Eimskip had at any yard dates back to mid-2015 when it cancelled an order at another Chinese shipbuilder.

Eimskip’s order is the first contract for any new boxships in 2017.
