General cargo ship sinks near Guangdong

Chinese general cargo ship Yu Tong 1 sank near Huilai, Guangdong in stormy weather on Sunday.

The incident happened when the vessel, carrying 5,000 tons of iron ore, was enroute from Maoming to Jieyang in Guangdong.

All of the 14 crew abandoned the ship after the ship started taking on water and began to tilt.

The local maritime safety administration deployed two tugboats and coordinated five nearby vessels to join the search and rescue, with all of the crew members recovered safely.

Yu Tong 1 is operated by Hainan-based Heyu Transport, which is mainly engaged in the short sea bulk and chemical transport business.
