Government urged to solve Indonesia port strike

Jakarta: The Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) has urged the government to settle a major strike this week at Tanjung Priok Port- Indonesia’s busiest port, caused by a dispute between state port operator PT Pelindo II and private businesses at the port.

Suryo Bambang Sulisto, chairman of Kadin said yesterday that the government must develop a new management system for the port business. He suggested that Pelindo focus on providing port facilities, while leaving other services, such as routing and shipping to the private sector and market mechanisms.

“A port is the vein of thousands of port service supplier companies, but the state-owned port operator still monopolizes it. We need to have a clear mechanism to keep healthy competition. That includes increasing the role of the port authority as the regulator and the government’s representative at the port to have a strong and neutral role,” Sulisto urges.

PT Pelindo II have since said today that port operations were back to normal. [05/06/13]
