Great Barrier Reef dredging ban

Sydney: A dredging ban is coming into place in further legislation for Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, a potential headache for port planners in the commodity rich island.

Canberra will legislate a permanent ban on the dumping of capital dredge spoil on the world’s largest coral reef system.

Environment Minister Greg Hunt said the ban would apply to pre-existing proposals for capital dredging as well as any future proposals.
