Greek shipping companies look for office space in Limassol

Athens: Greek shipping companies have been enquiring about renting office space in Limassol, Cyprus’ shipping and trading hub, Splash can confirm.

“About a month ago, we had a number of requests from Greek shipping companies, looking for office space and also for information about operating in Cyprus,” the head of commercial lettings at a Cypriot real estate agency told Splash by phone today.

“During the past few weeks, it has been very quiet,” the source continued, “but I expect the next two weeks to be very decisive.”

Splash spoke to a number of realtors of office space and commercial properties in Limassol today, all of whom said they had received similar enquiries or had heard of the interest.

None of the realtors said they were working on any deals, but all expected to receive further calls from Greek shipping companies in the wake of Sunday’s referendum in Greece.

Last week, the director general of the Cyprus Shipping Chamber, Thomas Kazakos, said Greek companies had been enquiring with maritime service providers about tax and administration issues in Cyprus.

In April, Cyprus said it would step up efforts to attract foreign shipping companies to settle in the country and has been developing an incentives package, aimed particularly at encouraging shipowners and managers to the country.
