Hantong denies moving into shipowning

Shanghai: Hantong Ship Heavy Industry has denied widespread reports that it has followed the trend among Chinese yards of entering into shipowning. Various media sources suggested that a pair of 50,000 dwt heavylift ships ordered by Singapore’s Da Sin Shipping were actually to be owned by the yard. The ships are to be delivered in the second half of 2013.

“Yes, we get the order to build the two heavylift ships for the Singapore company,” an official from Hantong confirmed to SinoShip News, while clarifying, “We are only responsible for building it, but will not own them."

As orders have dried up this year one of the big trends has been for yards, including CSSC and SinoPacific, to enter shipowning, generally out of Hong Kong, with a view to chartering newbuilds to owners.  [04/07/12]
