Indian yard workers go on hunger strike

Around 350 workers of Western India Shipyard have gone on hunger strike protesting parent firm ABG Shipyard’s failure to pay wages for the past seven months.

The hunger strike kicked off today and local trade unions are threatening to carry on with the protest all week. A local union official said the workers had exhausted all other means of getting their message across to top management.

Three men have even said they will extend their hunger strike for as long as it takes for either ABG or the government to resolve the payment issue.

ABG has been going through a corporate debt restructuring since last year.
