Jacob Stolt-Nielsen dies, aged 83

London: Jacob Stolt-Nielsen, founder of Norway’s Stolt-Nielsen group, has passed away aged 83.

He passed away at home in Oslo surrounded by his family, the company said.

In 1959, Stolt-Nielsen founded Parcel Tankers Inc, which later became Stolt Tankers and ultimately the Stolt-Nielsen group as we know it today.

He served as CEO and chairman of the board of Stolt-Nielsen Ltd since the company was founded, before stepping down as CEO in 2000 and as chairman in December 2009.

Stolt-Nielsen remained a director of the company until his retirement in December 2014.

Stolt Tankers today is the world’s largest operator of chemical tankers, with 31 handysize and MR-size chemships in its fleet.

As well as Stolt Tankers, he also founded Stolthaven Terminals in 1971; Stolt Sea Farm in 1972, Stolt-Nielsen Seaway in 1973 and Stolt Tank Containers in 1983.

Stolt-Nielsen was also co-founder and the first chairman of Det Norske Oljeselskap (DNO), a Norwegian oil E&P company.
