Jade Shipmanagement: Hong Kong’s newest manager

Hong Kong: The city of Hong Kong is well versed in eager entrepreneurs going it alone and making a livelihood, and this goes too for shipmanagement, a sector that has seen many top officials splinter off from big companies to do their own thing. The latest in this series of aspirant independent shipmanagers is J M Cordeiro, formerly with giant Bernhard Schulte, and now managing director of December-created Jade Shipmanagement.

Still to get its first ships for management, Cordeiro says the firm has commenced business development on a “war footing”, and owners in Japan, China, Hong Kong and Europe are being targeted.

An Indian national, Cordeiro had 18 years at sea before coming ashore in 1995. After working for various owners in Mumbai he joined Eurasia, a former scion of Bernhard Schulte, where he worked through to November last year. He left to form Jade along with a number of well-placed Bernhard Schulte personnel. As well as Jade Shipmanagement, there is also Jade Marine Services, which Cordeiro has positioned to offer a similar breadth of services to shipmanagers far bigger than his in the Chinese Special Administrative Region. A particular speciality is Jade’s knowledge of Chinese shipyards.

“We need to control our expenses as we are using our own working capital. There is no support or sponsorship from any shipowner or banking institutions,” Cordeiro explains.

A very decent website is up and running too.

“We provide personalised services, at reasonable management fees, spares/stores/lubricants costs,” Cordeiro says.  [19/03/13]
