Nigerian ports at risk from severe diesel shortage

Cairo: Nigeria’s severe fuel shortage has started to cause widespread disruption to everyday services, including the nation’s ports.

The Seaport Terminal Operators Association of Nigeria (STOAN) said in a statement: “The lingering fuel crisis in the country may hamper port operations.”

The crisis started weeks before the March 29 elections, with oil suppliers hit by tightened credit lines amid halved international oil prices, a slump in the naira currency, and unpaid government debts the suppliers claim amount to nearly $1bn.

“If this situation persists, it will adversely affect operations at the port, affect discharge of vessels and delivery of cargo,” the port body said.
