Northern Offshore sells semi-submersible to focus on jackups

Texas-based offshore driller Northern Offshore has sold the 1977-built semi-submersible rig Energy Driller to an unnamed party, who will convert the rig for alternative use.

The rig has been cold stacked in Bahrain since 2015 after coming off a contract in India.

Dr Yuanhui Sun, interim chairman and CEO of Northern Offshore, commented: “The sale of the Energy Driller completes Northern Offshore’s strategy to divest of its floating drilling rig assets and allows us to focus our resources on building and operating a fleet of new, high specification jackups.”

Northern Offshore sold drillship Energy Searcher in 2016 and last month sold off a pair of jackup rigs to Perenco’s Dixstone Holdings. The company was part of John Fredriksen’s offshore empire until he sold it in 2015 to China’s Shandong Offshore International Company for around $165m.
