Panamanian special forces deployed as ship attacked off Colon

Panama City: In a bizarre turn of events over the weekend an aging general cargo ship, bound for demolition, was boarded by thieves in Panamanian waters before commandos stormed the ship and arrested the five perpetrators.

Five men boarded the 1986-built VFM Alita on Sunday off Colon port. Navy special forces were alerted and rushed to the scene, arresting the group which included one minor.

The 4,250 dwt ship, which has been in lay-up since late last year, is set to be scrapped soon. It belongs to Venezuela Feeder Maritime.
