Pasir Panjang accelerates expansion project

Singapore: The expansion project for the Pasir Panjang container port in the southwest of Singapore, are being accelerated to meet the growing demand at the Singapore port.

According to Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew, phases 3 and phase 4 of the project will be fully operational by the end of 2017, two years ahead of the original plan.

The expansion project will add new handling capacity of 15m teu per annum, increasing total capacity by more than 40% to 50m teu.

“PSA will invest some $3.5 billion in these new facilities, which will enable us to handle more of the largest container ships with lengths of some 400 metres. This expansion will provide sufficient capacity whilst development work on Tuas Port is underway,” the minister said. The whole port is set to relocate in the next decade to Tuas.

Singapore Port recorded a 4% growth in container throughput in 2014. Lui said growth is expected to continue in tandem with regional demand.
