Plans to link Yangtze and Pearl rivers

Guangzhou: Guizhou province in the southwest of the country plans to accelerate construction of an inter-provincial navigation channel, which will link China’s two economic heartlands, the Yangtze and Pearl rivers, to exceed a 50m tonne capacity by 2020.
According to the Guizhou waterway development plan, by 2020, it aims to build the Wujiang waterway route linking the Yangtze to the Pearl at Panjiang and to the Red River, the Qingshui River and the Duliu River route in the south.
It also plans to increase the capacity of Chishui River, a tributary of the upper reaches of the Yangtze, and the only river in the province that can provide navigation to the Yangtze directly.

Such links could provide shippers in the likes of Chongqing in the mid-west regions with southern alternative export links.  [14/02/13]
