Port of Oakland to extend night-time operations

The Port of Oakland announced on Monday that its International Container Terminal will continue with night-time operations from Mondays to Thursdays even beyond the expiry of a port subsidy this month.

Night-time operations began two months ago as a temporary measure and funded by a $1.5m Port of Oakland subsidy program. It has proved very popular.

The effect has been to allow truck drivers to pick up loaded import containers at night, rather than the busier daylight hours.

To compensate for the end of the subsidy there will be a flat rate fee of $30 per loaded container (import and export) to cover the extra labour costs involved.

The extended night-time operations will be reviewed after 90 days.

The Port of Oakland is the fifth busiest container port in the US and the third busiest in California after the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.
