Dubai: Typhon, a British company set to launch a private navy to counter piracy in the region, is looking to base its operations in Dubai. The aim is to get the company’s escort ships operational by July.
Simon Murray, the non-executive chairman of the mining giant Glencore, serves as chairman of Typhon.
"With millions paid out in ransoms to pirates and much more money lost by businesses in fuel costs avoiding pirates, it is important that businesses are granted a safer passage with their cargo through dangerous waters. The benefits to business will be substantial," Typhon's chief executive, Anthony Sharp told Dubai newspaper, The National.
Three converted container feeder ships are set to be launched this summer, each carrying between four and six small fast patrol boats capable of speeds over 40 knots. [01/04/13]
