PTP expansion will see capacity surpass 10m teu

Kuala Lumpur:  The new ceo of Malaysia’s largest box terminal Port of Tanjung Pelepas will be busy straight away overseeing a RM1.4bn expansion plan. Glen Hilton, an Australian citizen, previously worked at Ansett before joining CSX World Terminals and in turn DP World where he worked most recently as the Dubai terminal operator’s head of Southeast Asian operations.

“The container port business is highly competitive as regional ports are also expanding their capacity and stepping up their level of services to customers. Hilton will deploy his wealth of experience in bringing operational best practices from a global perspective to PTP and oversee the successful commissioning of our expansion programme. This expansion will ensure that we enhance our value proposition to existing and new customers,” PTP chairman Datuk Mohd Sidik Shaik Osman said in a statement.

Two berths, three container yards, and a number of new cranes are on PTP’s extensive shopping list.  The berths should be up and running in 14 months time.

The expansion will raise PTP's annual handling capacity by 25% to 10.5m teu and increase the number of berths to 14 with total quay length of 5km. The new berths will be able to handle key customer Maersk’s giant 18,000 teu newbuilds. Last year the port handled 7.7m teu.  [13/03/13]
