Qatari rig keels over

Doha: A sheered jack up leg saw a 2014-built Qatari accommodation rig keel over on Sunday. The Rumailah, owned by Gulf Drilling International, suffered what the Qatari firm described a “punch-through incident” while working at the Maersk Oil-operated Al Shaheen field off Qatar, one of the world’s largest oil fields.

The crew were unharmed and escaped via lifeboats.

The rig has been sent to a local Nakilat yard for repairs which will last many months.

The rig was on a three year contract with Maersk Oil through to June 2017.
