Rig workers off Scotland hit by radiation

UK energy company EnQuest has come in for flak after the BBC reported that a number of workers on its Thistle platform were exposed to radiation last December while working in northern Scottish waters.

A number of Wood Group contractors have discovered they were exposed to alpha radiation.
EnQuest has since said “additional precautionary steps” have been taken.

The six men were doing shutdown work with pipe equipment, not wearing personal protective equipment when a reading showed radioactivity in the area.

EnQuest stressed the level of exposure was less than 1% of the level at which it is reportable to the UK’s Health and Safety Executive (HSE) however EnQuest advised the HSE of the matter at the time.
