Samsung Heavy to delay Statoil rig project due to construction accident

South Korea’s Samsung Heavy Industries is to delay the construction a jackup rig being built at the shipyard after a rig leg was severely damaged.

According to Samsung Heavy Industries, a 50-meter-long leg, which was connected to a crane, fell to the ground late Sunday while the construction team was attempting to lift and connect it with the main part of the rig.

No casualties were reported in the incident.

The rig is one of two large scale jackup rigs ordered by Norwegian energy company Statoil in June 2013 for $1.3bn. The other one has already been completed.

The rigs were originally scheduled to be delivered by April 2017.

The damage will likely cause long-term construction delays, massive financial losses and even a deficit for the project. Currently Samsung Heavy Industries is still assessing the damages.
