Scorpio Tankers charters in two Montanari aframaxes

Athens: Scorpio Tankers has chartered in one aframax product tanker from Italy’s Navigazione Montanari and placed another under its commercial management – continuing the NYSE-listed owner’s focus on mid-sized tankers.

The two 109,100-dwt vessels in question are thought to be the Valfoglia (built 2009) and Vallesina (built 2009), brokers told Splash today.

One vessel has been fixed on a two-year timecharter at a rate of $26,500 per day.

The terms of the one-year commercial management agreement for the other aframax were not disclosed. A representative for Navigazione Montanari said it was too early to comment, when contacted by Splash today.

Scorpio Tankers has this week ordered two medium range (MR) product tankers to be built at South Korea’s Hyundai Mipo yard. The contract was priced at $34.5m per vessel and includes options for six more.

The Monaco-based company has also just bought a 50,000-dwt MR newbuilding from York Maritime Holdings (part of York Capital) for $37m. The as-yet unnamed vessel is due for delivery later this year.

Scorpio Tankers has also recently purchased an LR2 product tanker currently under construction at Daehan Shipbuilding for $58.5m from an unnamed seller.
