Shanghai Shipyard eyes joint venture with Mitsui
Shanghai Shipyard, an affiliate yard of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), is looking to form a joint venture with Japan’s Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding (MES) to jointly develop its shipbuilding business, Splash understands.
According to a source in CSSC, the group has already separated Shanghai Shipyard’s operation from Hudong Zhonghua Shipbuilding, while Shanghai Shipyard remains a subsidiary of the latter, and CSSC is now looking to establish a joint venture yard between Shanghai Shipyard and MES.
When contacted by Splash, an official at Shanghai Shipyard declined to comment on the matter. CSSC and MES already operates a marine engine joint venture CSSC-MES Diesel Company.
Shanghai Shipyard was taken over by Hudong Zhonghua Shipbuilding due to huge losses. The yard received its first order this year in May, to build four 2,500teu containerships for Zhonggu Shipping.
