South Korea maps out port plans

South Korea has outlined plans to develop its ports, promising to spend KRW14.7trn ($13.4bn) through to 2020.

The nation’s 30 international trade ports and 29 coastal ports will be subject to the masterplan released by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.

The Korean government will put up half of the money and seek the rest from the private sector.

The masterplan calls for the Asian nation’s ports to handle a total of 1.4bn tons of cargo by 2020, up from the current 1.1bn tons.

South Korea finds itself in a fierce fight with neighbour China for ship calls.
