Statoil suspends drilling rig in Norwegian Sea

Athens: Statoil has idled its Scarabeo 5 drilling rig “due to overcapacity in its rig portfolio”.

The rig will be suspended once it has completed its contract to drill a well in the Kristin oil field  in the Norwegian Sea, north-west of Trondheim. The work will start in August and will last until at least March 1, 2016.

“We regret the need to suspend Scarabeo 5, but we will do our utmost to resume our drilling operations earlier than planned at the time of suspending the rig,” said Jon Arnt Jacobsen,Statoil’s senior vice-president of procurement, in a statement today.

Yesterday, Statoil placed a $1bn order for offshore oil platforms with Samsung Heavy Industries. The platforms will be deployed in the Johan Sverdrup field in the North Sea and should be completed by the end of 2018.
