Storm forces BP to start evacuating staff from Gulf of Mexico rigs

BP on Friday morning became the first oil producer to start evacuating some personnel from its US Gulf of Mexico rigs and platforms in anticipation of a brewing storm, according to Reuters.

The British supermajor was taking preventive action in light of a weather event that the US National Hurricane Centre said was a disturbance in the Caribbean near Cuba with a 20% chance of becoming a hurricane in the next two days.

Other rig operators in the Gulf had not begun evacuation by late Friday morning but said they were on high alert for any developments.
