Suez Canal workers sit-in causes chaos at Port Said

Cairo: Workers in Port Said port office staged a sit-in inside the Suez Canal building, which is for organizing the entry and exit of ships of both ports, Port Said and East Port Said, since 20:00hrs on Monday, in protest against the lack of employing new staff in the office.

Mohab Mamish, the chairman of the Suez Canal Authority, had promised a month ago to dissolve their problems and resolve their sit-in, with new employment scheduled for May 1, but Mamish failed to deliver.

A source in the authority said the protesting workers stopped the entry of a number of container ships calling at both ports.

The workers threatened to escalate their protest next week in case Mamish didn't implement his promise of employment.  [07/05/13]
