Swire tipped to restart Tasmania-China routes

Sydney: China Navigation subsidiary Swire Shipping is being tipped in the Australian media to start a route linking Tasmania with China. The Australian state has been without a China sailing route for a couple of years and the local exporters association has been lobbying hard to get a line interested. The route will be from Bell Bay to China via Hong Kong and is likely to come with some state funding to the tune of around A$10m a year.

Tasmanian Exporters Group chairman Bob Gozzi said yesterday he has been in discussions with Swire Shipping and in December last year firmed up proposals for a direct international export shipping service to return to Tasmania.

"The proposal is an 18-day service frequency from Bell Bay to Townsville, Shanghai and Hong Kong, as the global hub," he said.

Swire Shipping, however, was tight-lipped on the reports.  [15/01/13]
