Transocean cuts another 230 jobs

Transocean in Norway is to make at least another 230 of its employees redundant from its offshore drilling operations, reports say.

Steinar Nesse, head of Safe Transocean, told Stavanger Aftonbladet the company has signed a protocol for downsizing but no employees have received notice yet.

Staff levels reportedly are being adjusted relative to the number of rigs Transocean has in service. Only one will be under contract by the autumn; the rest will be laid up at Averøya Kristiansund.

The rig TO Arctic has a contract until March and will begin a new contract in May-June. Employees on the rig laid off during the interim. TO Winner‘s contract ends in August, after which it will go into cold lay-up without personnel onboard. TO Spitsbergen has a contract until March/April and afterwards will go into hot lay-up with 60 men onboard. TO Barents also has a contract for this spring and will be laid up with 20 men onboard once the term is up.

In 2014, there were 1,500 employees working at Transocean’s Norwegian office. Since then, the headcount has more than halved to around 700 workers.
