Union Maritime tanker goes missing off Benin

UK-based Union Maritime says it has lost communication with 2005-built oil products tanker Barrett, which was at anchor off Benin, West Africa.

The company has not been heard from the vessel since Tuesday, and alerted local maritime authorities the following day.

The last AIS position transmitted by the vessel was Tuesday at 2:47am, showing the vessel anchored off Cotonou.

“Whilst we are tirelessly working to locate the vessel, our primary concern is for the 22 crew on board and ensuring their safety,” the company said in a statement, adding that all possible options are being explored.
