Ureda family behind Scorpio product acquisitions

Splash understands the two product tankers sold earlier this week by Scorpio Tankers are heading to Compania Maritime Chilena (CMC), the firm controlled by the Ureda family who sold boxline Compania Chilena de Navegacion Interoceanica (CCNI) to Hamburg Sud two years ago.

NYSE-listed Scorpio Tankers sold the 2013-built MR product tankers STI Sapphire and STI Emerald for a total of $56.4m.

The new ships will double CMC’s tanker fleet. Like the other product tanker pair CMC controls, the new vessels are expected to go on charter to Chile’s state refiner, ENAP.

Scorpio, meanwhile, said it will use the funds to repay the $27.6m outstanding secured debt owed on the vessels, while it will also record a write-down of around $9.3m on the sale.
