US offshore regulatory bodies in line for budget hikes in 2017

The bodies charged with regulating offshore oil and gas exploration and extraction in the US stand to be better funded for their missions under budget requests made by President Barack Obama.

The President’s budget for the fiscal year 2017 includes a call for $175.1m for the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) and one for $204.87m to help run the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE).

The requested amounts include provisions for increased staffing levels.

BOEM is tasked with managing the development of offshore energy and mineral resources on the US Outer Continental Shelf in an environmentally responsible way.

BSEE enforces safety and environmental regulations in the offshore industries.

Both agencies were created by – but independent of – the Department of Interior.
