US Senators call for public hearing about proposed Hudson River anchorages

Two members of the US Senate have called on the US Coast Guard (USCG) to hold a public hearing on a proposed plan to establish 10 commercial anchorage sites along the Hudson River.

Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, both Democrats for New York, have written to the USCG asking that the residents, businesses and local officials along the river in areas where anchorages are proposed, should have more chances to express their concerns and raise questions.

Schumer, the senior senator, and Gillibrand, the junior, say there are reasons to worry about potential impacts on the environment, tourism industry and waterfront development projects.

Maritime industry spokespeople say the anchorages are needed to aid safe navigation of the river.

Schumer and Gillibrand’s letter comes past the deadline for USCG to call for a public hearing.

But written comments from the public can still be submitted until September 7.
