Wuchang Shipbuilding wins RMB2.5bn contract

Beijing: As the traditional merchant shipbuilding market has been in the doldrums in China, shipyards in China have been looking for profits from alternative orders for offshore equipment, fishing ships and even non-marine business. Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry recently has signed a RMB2.5bn shipbuilding contract with the government in Beijing for nine marine surveillance vessels.

The order includes five 3,000 ton vessels and four 5,000 ton vessels and they will be built according to the existing “China Marine Surveillance 50” and “China Marine Surveillance 01” designs respectively.

The vessels will be used for marine surveillance in China’s jurisdictional waters and also the disputed Diaoyu island region. [18/01/13]
