15 dead as boxship slams into fishing vessel

Cairo: The death toll from a tragic collision between a containership and a fishing vessel yesterday morning on the Suez Canal has risen to 15. A Panamanian-flagged boxship, which some local media has claimed is Kuwaiti-owned, slammed into a fishing vessel with 40 Egyptian crew onboard yesterday. At least another three people are thought to be missing.

The Panamanian-flagged containership initially failed to stop following the accident, doing so only later at the port of Safaga in southeastern Egypt, south of the Gulf, according to Abdel Rahim Mustafa, spokesman for Egypt’s Public Authority of Red Sea Ports.  [15/12/14]
